What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage available to all people with Medicare. It came about as part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003.

Anyone who is entitled to Medicare Part A and/or enrolled in Medicare Part B is eligible to enroll in a Part D prescription drug planAnyone who is entitled to benefits under Medicare Part A or who is enrolled in Medicare Part B is eligible to enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan. There is also substantial federal help for "dual eligibles" (people with Medicare and Medicaid) to pay some of the beneficiary costs of Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.

The Medicare Modernization Act does not add prescription drug coverage to the Medicare program itself. Instead, it requires Medicare beneficiaries who want drug coverage to select and enroll in a private plan approved by Medicare. These are called Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.
